History

Monarch Insurance Services, Inc. (MIS) was established in 1981 by Mark Polivka and is a locally owned independent insurance general agency specializing in commercial casualty and property insurance. MIS is one of the largest independent insurance agencies in the State of Hawaii and has extensive market access and availability to virtually every local insurance carrier, as well as markets in both the continental U.S. and internationally. And with the acquisition of the Bishop Insurance Agency in 2008, MIS is now the oldest agency in Hawaii insuring businesses throughout the State since 1859.

MIS is the leading insurance broker for the healthcare industry in Hawaii and list most of Hawaii’s major medical institutions as our long-term clients. MIS also has an extensive list of clients in other major industries including real estate, construction, development, non-profits, hospitality and education.

The MIS business philosophy is based on trust, dedication and a drive to service our valued clients’ needs. Our services range from traditional property and casualty coverage to complete catastrophic protection packages. We also have experience in alternative risk financing and have helped many larger clients assess the advantages of alternative risk financing schemes, such as self-insurance, large deductible programs, and captives.

In addition to our Hawaii operations, MIS founded Monarch-Kneis Insurance Services, LLC in 2006 specializing in construction risk services for clients throughout North America utilizing capacity throughout the world. Monarch-Kneis recognizes the importance of industry-specific expertise to assist our clients in solving problems unique to the construction industry. Our team of construction risk professionals enjoys a nationwide reputation as experts in focused construction specialties.

Monarch Premium Volume:

The MIS family of agencies places approximately $75,000,000 in annual premiums for commercial property and casualty clients. MIS only accesses insurance carriers that maintain a significant amount of capital and surplus. As a result, all insurance carriers with whom MIS places coverage with have the financial strength and stability to pay claims on behalf of the clients. Unlike other insurance brokers who place coverages through insurance intermediaries, we have the ability to negotiate directly with the carrier’s underwriters because of the large volume of business we place with these carriers.

In addition to brokering business through the standard market, MIS is also licensed as an excess and surplus lines broker. Business placed with surplus lines carriers is done in compliance with the State of Hawaii’s insurance code.
